If you’re looking for an adventure that’s equal parts breathtaking, challenging, and unforgettable, Lake Nachtigal in Debundscha, Cameroon, deserves a spot on your bucket list. From scenic skies and lively fish markets to unexpected bike mishaps and endless stair climbs, this trip had it all. Let’s dive into what it’s really like to tour this hidden gem.

The Journey Begins: A Scenic Ride to Debundscha

Our adventure started with big smiles and no idea what awaited us. On the way, we couldn’t resist pausing to soak in the beauty of the skies. The colors, the calm—it was a reminder of just how good God is.

Once we reached Debundscha, we stumbled across a small beach. At first glance, it seemed ordinary—fishermen unloading fresh catches into bowls, villagers heading off to sell fish in the local market. But what looked like a regular fishing spot actually turned out to be one of the busiest fish markets in the area. Buyers even came from neighboring towns like Limbe and Idenau to stock up on fresh fish.

Asking for Directions: Land or Water?

Since our goal was Lake Nachtigal, we asked a local man for directions. He explained two possible routes:

  • By boat: A ride that drops you off right at the base of the stairs leading to the lake.

  • By land: A road that winds its way through the village before reaching the same starting point.

We decided to take the land route. Surprisingly, the road was smoother than most other tourist paths in Cameroon. No endless rocks or dusty trails—just a fairly manageable ride. But as the saying goes, it’s often the small stones that trip the giants.

An Unexpected Accident

Halfway through, disaster struck. We got into a minor bike accident. Thankfully, it wasn’t too serious. I managed to jump off (thanks to my experience as a “bike hopper”), but Solange wasn’t as lucky—she picked up a few scrapes, and even worse, my drink spilled and became the “refreshment” of choice for passersby!

Still, we dusted ourselves off and carried on like true adventurers. A little shaken, a little bruised, but determined.

The Endless Stairs

Soon, we arrived at the stairs. If you’ve ever faced a staircase that felt like it would never end, multiply that by ten—that’s what awaited us here. Step after step, we climbed, almost ready to turn back at one point. But with some encouragement from the guides, we pushed through.

At last, the stairs ended… but the real adventure was just beginning.

Into the Forest

From here, we entered dense forest. It was beautiful, but also tricky. Solange kept hearing animal sounds and panicked each time, but of course—this is the forest! Expect monkeys, birds, and the occasional rustle in the bushes.

The terrain was rough. Slippery rocks, thorny “chukochoko grass” (a local plant with tiny spikes), and tricky climbs made the journey even more demanding. Pro tip: wear proper hiking gear—closed shoes, socks, trousers, and long sleeves—to avoid scratches and bruises.

Climbing Challenges

At some points, we had to scramble up rocks. At others, ropes were the only way forward. Imagine generations of visitors pulling themselves up with the same rope—you’ll laugh nervously but grip it tightly anyway. Exhaustion set in, but the thought of reaching the lake kept us moving.

Finally, Lake Nachtigal

And then, just like that, the forest cleared. Before us lay Lake Nachtigal—a peaceful, almost magical sight. Calm waters, fresh air, and an energy that seemed to wash away all the fatigue from the climb.

But before filming, our guides performed traditional rites at the lake’s edge. This is taken very seriously—respect the customs and always follow instructions. We also heard stories of past visitors who ignored warnings and got into trouble. Lesson: enjoy the lake, but never underestimate it.

Wrapping Up the Adventure

As the sun began to set, we retraced our steps and eventually made it back to the sea where we started. To mark the moment, I wrote my channel name in the sand: I came, I saw, I conquered—and I left in one piece.

What a day!
