With the recent release of the Starlink Mini, which is far less expensive that the previous models of Starlink devices,  more and more Cameroonians are rushing to purchase this affordable internet kit.

While it offers exciting benefits, many buyers jump in without fully understanding the costs, limitations, and setup challenges involved in using Starlink in Cameroon.

If you’re considering buying Starlink for personal or business use, this guide outlines five essential things you must know before importing or activating your kit. It could save you from making a costly mistake.

1. Starlink Is Not Officially Authorized in Cameroon

Despite its global availability, Starlink is not yet licensed to operate in Cameroon. This means Cameroonians cannot activate their Starlink kits using a Cameroonian address through official means.

However, as the saying goes, "Impossible n’est pas Camerounais."

Through alternative setups and technical workarounds, many Starlink experts in Cameroon have enabled users to access the service. But here’s the catch:
You will likely need to pay a Starlink technician or expert to activate your account and configure your kit. Trying to activate it yourself without proper guidance could result in your device being blacklisted by Starlink’s system.

So, factor in an activation or setup fee when calculating your total Starlink startup cost.

2. Starlink Internet Subscription Fees Are High

Another critical point is the monthly subscription cost. In Cameroon, Starlink users rely on Roaming Plans since the service is not officially authorized.

The two available plans are:

  • Starlink Roam Unlimited

  • Starlink Roam Regional 50GB

These plans are more expensive than what authorized countries pay for standard residential plans. For example, in 2024, Starlink raised the price of Roam plans across Africa.

As of August 2025, the Starlink Roam Unlimited Plan costs around 58,000 XAF per month, a significant increase from the 21,000 XAF cost just a year earlier.

So if you’re already struggling to afford data bundles from CAMTEL, MTN, or Orange, Starlink might not be the best financial fit. It is, without a doubt, a premium service.

However, many users justify the cost due to:

  • Superfast speeds

  • Unlimited data

  • The ability to connect up to 150 devices on a single kit

3. There Is a 2-Month Roaming Limit

While the Roaming Plan allows Cameroonians to access Starlink service, it comes with a 2-month roaming usage limit.

After two months of usage in a non-authorized country like Cameroon, Starlink may restrict your internet access due to policy enforcement.

Fortunately, there is a workaround—though not free.
You’ll need to consult a Starlink technician who can help bypass the restriction, usually for a fee.

This is an ongoing cost and something every buyer should be prepared for.

4. Beware of the Starlink “Out of Region” Fee

In 2024, Starlink introduced a new "Out of Region" fee policy. This fee applies when you try to activate or use your Starlink kit outside the region in which it was originally purchased.

For example, if you import a kit from Nigeria but attempt to activate it using a European or American service address, Starlink will charge an extra out of region fee on top of your normal subscription.

However, if you activate using a service address within Africa, you typically won’t be charged this additional fee.

Still, this setup can be tricky. You may need a Starlink expert’s assistance to avoid being billed extra or getting stuck during the activation process.

5. Starlink Mini vs. Starlink Standard Version 2 – Which Should You Buy?

Cameroonians often ask which model of Starlink kit to purchase—the Standard Version 2 or the newer Starlink Mini.

Here’s the advice:

Go for the Starlink Mini, and here’s why:

  • It’s much more affordable than the Standard Kit

  • It’s lightweight and portable

  • It can be powered using a power bank with the right adapter

This makes it ideal for users in rural areas without electricity, as it can operate for up to 8 hours off-grid.
For mobile entrepreneurs, field workers, or village homes, the Starlink Mini is a game-changer.

In Summary

If you're considering buying or importing a Starlink kit in Cameroon, here are the five key things to keep in mind:

  1. Starlink is not authorized in Cameroon – You’ll need expert setup support

  2. Subscription fees are high – Currently 58,000 XAF per month for the unlimited plan

  3. 2-month roaming limit applies – Requires occasional technical intervention to continue

  4. Out of region fee may apply – Depending on your activation address

  5. Starlink Mini is the better choice – It’s cheaper, portable, and powerbank-compatible
