President Biya gave his highly anticipated 2017 end of year speech at exactly 8PM. Just like many Southern Cameroonians expected, he discussed about the ongoing Anglophone crisis in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon.

Among many things he talked about concerning the Anglophone crisis, these are the 6 points that caught our attention.

  • President Biya said in the North West and South West region of Cameroon, extremists took advantage of the grievances of teachers and lawyers to propagate their secession ideologies through violence. He added that many of our compatriots have lost their lives through violence perpetrated by the secessionists and many of the Cameroon defense forces were also assassinated in cold blood in their line of duty. He extended his heart felt condolences to all the families who lost their love ones in the violence perpetrated by the secessionists.
  • President Biya said he has issued instruction that all those who have taken up arms, who perpetrate or encourage violence should be fought relentlessly and held accountable before the courts of law. He congratulated the defense and security forces on the bravery, determination, restraint and professionalism that they have demonstrated so far.
  • President Biya mentioned all the measures his government has taken to address the grievances of the teachers and lawyers. He clearly stated that he has set up the commission for the promotion of bilingualism and multiculturalism which will play a key role in promoting our togetherness.
  • President Biya said vast majority of Anglophone Cameroonians aspire to live together in peace. He said the wish of every Cameroonian of good will is to see to an end to the tensions in the North West and South West region and a return to normalcy.
  • President Biya said 2018 will be an important election year and all measures will be taken to ensure that the 2018 election is carried out in calm and serenity.
  • President Biya concluded by saying that Dialogue is the main and only means of resolving difference only if it respect constitutional legality. In other words the Cameroon government will only dialogue on issues that falls in line with the constitution of Cameroon. Issues like federalism or secession don,t fall inline with our constitution.
